All About Moura

The beautiful town of Moura in Southern Portugal is considered to be the last place on earth before the Abyss. It is said that the river of Serra in which the town is built has no outlet; all that flows out is the river of Lusignan. This, as you will know, is the river of death and destruction and the town is built upon the river itself. In fact, the town was built directly upon the river which leads to the sea.

Moura is actually a large city in the relatively sparsely populated (and rather poorly-populated) Alentejo province. The name "Moura" means "little church". Legend has it that the Princess Saluquiana of Portugal threw herself from her tower of the castle after the latter's lover was killed; after this, the Moorish forces disguised themselves in the best of their clothing, thus fooling the Portuguese and lowering the drawbridge so that they could enter the town. The Portuguese army soon took over the town, but not without losing some of their best men to the Moorish troops, who then made a retreat back to their castle.

As you can imagine, there is a large number of visitors to the town every day. Some of these come with tourists' guides and can help you to get around to some of the best areas of town. However, most visitors are locals. Most of them are elderly people and they often have no way of communicating. They are therefore left relying upon the local language of Portuguese, which is not always an easy task.

You cannot blame them for being a little overwhelmed by the town. And as you may also be aware, many of the local people speak only Portuguese; therefore, if you want to find out how to talk to them, you must take some basic lessons in the language first.

You can visit the town any time between May and October. If you plan to stay long, there are several great hotels in the area that will cater to your every need. Some of the more famous ones include: Cravo, Casa Nacional, Hotel de la Paz de la Plata, Hotel Arrabal, Hotel Estrella Calle, Hotel Estrada and Hotel Fazenda de Mar, amongst many others.
