The Importance of Being Urgent, A Short Comedy for serious people is an early play by Oscar Wilde. It is an amusing play about the antics of three fictitious characters who are forced to perform in a play that is organized by a character called Mr. Burke.

Martin Lee plays the part of Mr. Burke, an old gentleman who wants to set up his own show but lacks the experience and funds required to do so. The other two characters are a scrawny wretch with a rather ugly face, and a character whose name is Mr. Wilkes. They are the comic reliefs for the audience, who find themselves amused by the antics of the three main characters in the play.

Martin Lee is rather unknown as an actor but his performance as Mr. Burke is quite good. The character has an exaggerated manner of talking and making faces, but he is quite capable of being funny. The acting technique used by him during the first part of the play is very effective, and he also makes the audience laugh during the second part of the play as well. One of the most amusing scenes in the play involves a confrontation between the characters of Wilkes and Wilkins, played by Michael Crawford and Bernard Lee respectively. In the scene Wilks is trying to get rid of Wilkins by asking Wilkins' help to set up his show. When Wilkins refuses to lend him money, Wilks takes on Wilkins' identity and tries to get rid of him by having the audience believe that Wilkins was once known as "Willekes the Fat."

At this stage Martin Lee starts showing a certain amount of the arrogance that characterizes some of the other characters in the play. The character of Wilkins is quite absurd, and this attitude is evident throughout the play, especially towards the climax of the play, when Wilkes is about to get rid of Wilkins and is about to kill the real Wilkins. The audience sees that Wilkins has already succeeded in removing Wilkins and is about to put Wilkins' identity out into the open again, when Wilkins suddenly falls down unconscious.

At this time Martin Lee changes the nature of the role of Wilkes, making him much more sympathetic, but not allowing him to appear to be anything other than the comic relief, as he was in the first part of the play. At this stage of the play, however, Wilkins' behavior becomes rather predictable, as he is constantly being picked on and taunted by Wilkins' friends, and colleagues. Wilkins even refuses to speak to them when they approach him. At one point he says to Mr. Burke that he would rather be hanged than admit that he was once known as Wilkes the Fat.

Martin Lee is good as the actor in Bunbury, and he adds a lot of humor to the play. His portrayal of Wilkes is funny because of his exaggerated manner of speaking and facial expressions, but he makes it clear that his actions are not at all sincere. There are moments where Wilkins seems to have been taken seriously by the people around him, but they don't take any notice, and the only response that he gets from them is laughter. The audience can see that the character is indeed an exaggeration, but this isn't really Wilkins' fault, because this kind of acting is very common in the play.
